Me speaking Cantonese

I’ve been learning Cantonese for about 1year and 3 months,though these last 3 months have not been very productive since I’m not in Hong Kong anymore and somehow my motivation seems to have fade away.I decided to record myself so that  in the future I can see how much progress I’ve made. I normally don’t do  this kind of stuff because I don’t quite like hearing my own voice when speaking a foreign language.From my own ears it sounds great,however, when I listen to the recording I get so frustrated that it takes me 1 or 2 days to recover.Interestingly enough, this time I think it sounds ok. I mean, my pronunciation is far from accurate and tone mistakes are more than common, but it doesn’t bother me that much anymore. I think I’m finally getting over this whole issue.I thought it would be helpful if I put a transcript,because it might be kind of difficult to understand my broken Cantonese. I hope you can all understand what I’m saying. Comments are welcome!

  1. You speak well but better read slower in those vocabularies that you are not familiar with. Since Chinese are composed of single words, Chinese reading emphasizes on accurate pronounciation and correct intonation on every single word.

    你講得唔錯,但唔熟既字詞要讀慢D. 因為中文係由單字組成,讀中文要著重每個字”字正腔圓”

  2. Wow! That was impressive. Congratulations!

  3. Now I’m ashamed of myself. You speak much better than me and I study and speak Cantonese all the time. Good stuff.

  4. Hi, Marcelo! Bravo! I check both your blog & Milan’s blog every day to see if there’s any new posting. I think Milan speaks Cantonese very well; he was just being modest!

  5. Thanks Charlie!But there’s no need to check my blog everyday, I don’t post that often.I think once in every three weeks is ok.And I agree with you : Milan’s Cantonese is great, he was just being modest.

  6. Hi Marcelo. You did well. I am happy that i can understand most of what you were saying. It’s good that you actually made a recording so that you can measure progress now and in the future. I agree there’s not a lot of material on Cantonese these days so keep up the good work.

  7. great job~ u speak cantonese so well~~ 繼續努力!!

  8. =] 好野喎,但係有d字真係要講番慢少少

  9. Hi you commented on my blog about whether I was learning Cantonese and what resources I use. Yes I am but still early days. Your Cantonese speaking must be pretty good because I could pick out the words I expect to understand after looking at the text :) . I answered the question in a little more detail here http://friedelcraft.blogspot.com/2007/11/learning-multiple-languages.html

  10. Marcelo, I have started a new blog on Cantonese. I have added you to my blogroll. I will officially announce it later this week. Meanwhile, feel free to visit it and leave comments.
