I get so mad when people pronounce there cantonese wrong like the word “nei” for you. They instead pronounce its as “lei” replacing the n- sound with l- soo annoying

I have trouble making out the correspondent’s English. LOL.

By the way, the best way to treat this would be to teach standard Cantonese phonetics, like pinyin as in Standard Mandarin

Agreed, this site is a fantastic resource for those like myself, who are trying to learn and just need to HEAR more!! The romanizations are indispensible for me.

Hi Marcelo,

Thanks for this one and the others. I am listenig to them repeatedly on my ipod. The ones with romanisation are particularly helpful to me. You have put up stories here that add interest to learning Cantonese. As you say, so many learning materials are dry and uninteresting. Thanks for putting in the time anmd effort to create this blog. Much appreciated.

It’s absolutement true that many cantonese people prononce lazy sounds. It’s particularly bad that children take such phonetic pattern as the language model. I haven’t heard all your stories yet. But in The 3 little pigs and Fox & Tigre, we can quite easily find lazy examples produced by the young story tellers.

Thanks for this! There are a few places where the text doesn’t exactly match what’s being said though… so it’s a bit hard to follow in those places.

The Sidney Lau textbooks are considered the most comprehensive course for learning Cantonese and were originally designed to teach Cantonese to foreigners serving in the Hong Kong Police force. And although several decades old, last I heard they were still being used there. You can read more about it here:

Hi bobcat,

I haven’t heard of Sidney Lau’s book before and I don’t have it. Do you know if it’s available on the internet? If I can find it, I might record it in the future.The only tricky thing though is that since the book is consisted of dialogues I would have to find somebody else to record.

Short stories can work ok too, I guess, but I prefer longer ones since you hear the same words over and over again in different contexts.

Say, do you have the Sidney Lau series of textbooks? They have some pretty long dialogs in Cantonese characters but there’s no audio to go with it. They aren’t as interesting as fairy tales, but I know a lot of Cantonese learners who would be extremely grateful to the audio for it. Maybe after you are done with your short stories you might consider recording those dialogs?
